Abbeydore Deanery is a Christian grouping of 35 churches in 33 parishes.
From Hay-on-Wye and Hereford in the North, towards the Black Mountains of Wales and Brecon Beacons National Park. Four priests with lay and ordained volunteers, administer to a community of around 12,000 souls. Part of Hereford Diocese, the Church of England, and the international community of Anglicans.
This year’s diocesan theme is ENGAGEMENT. Previous years of PRAYER (2023) and FAITH (2024) have inspired us to focus this year on how our churches reach out to love and serve their communities and know them better. Let’s make 2025 a year of celebrating how this happens across the Abbeydore Deanery. From large projects like The Hub at St Peters, and the Food for Families initiative which distributes food support through our schools ahead of the main holidays, and the churches who open their doors to welcome pilgrims, to smaller initiatives that regularly offer times for our communities to get together – often over tea and excellent cake!
The symbol of this year of ENGAGEMENT is a pair of sandals – how are we stepping out to serve the needs of others? How are we stepping into the shoes of others to better understand and connect with our communities? A pair of sandals will be travelling around the deanery and appearing at different events when you’ll be encouraged to add a label, or even a photo, which describes a form of engagement with your community or something you’ve learnt by engaging with others beyond the church.  Let’s continue to inspire one another to be watchful for God, who is already at work in our communities, and be willing to join in.
Below is a conversation with Bishop Richard, former chaplain to the Bishop, Revd Nicol Kinrade and Revd Steve Hollinghurst, Mission Enabler – Environment. To mark the start of our Year of Engagement in 2025, Revd Steve explores the hopes and prayers for Bishop Richard and Revd Nicol Kinrade.
